Olivetti M24

Olivetti M24 is the first Olivetti computer
compatible with the DOS operating system, and opened
to all available software on the market.
The choice became necessary after the failure of Olivetti M20,
the first personal computer of the Italian company,
designed on the PCOS operating system,
a particular language developed by Olivetti and
totally incompatible with the common software.

But even more conditioning was the historic alliance
signed by Olivetti with AT&T,
the giant American telecommunications company;
following that agreement the sales of Olivetti M24
increased incredibly, to the point that Olivetti became,
in 1985, the second largest computer company in the world and first in Europe.
In the same time Olivetti M24, appeared more professional and versatile,
the cabinet was separate from the keyboard and could contain,
the floppy disk drive, and a 5MB Winchester hard disk.

The hardware was based on an Intel 8086 8-MHz 16-bit processor,
with improved graphics better than Olivetti M20.

The PC was born, in its basic version, with a four-color CGA graphic card
with a 640x400 pixels resolution, two 5.25" - 360 KB single side floppy drives
and 128 KB RAM upgradable to 640 KB.

The early versions of Olivetti M24 was sold without hard disk,
therefore users were forced to start the machine
from the DOS operating system floppy disk.

At the end of 1986,
was born the first hard disk (10 MB) for Olivetti M24 in an internal version,
made by O.P.E. (Olivetti Peripheral Equipment),
it cost between 2.000.000 and 5.000.000 Italian Lira.

For not disappoint customers and software houses,
Olivetti had made Z8000 processor emulation board,
sister of the board of Olivetti M20.
This card allowed to use all the software written for
Olivetti PCOS, the operating system of Olivetti M20.

We can consider the Olivetti M24 a
Italian "milestone" computer history.

Olivetti M24 cost about 6.000.000 Italian Lira in January 1986
approximately € 6,600 in 2008, was supplied with a user's manual,
GW-Basic software with Manual
and the MS-DOS operating system version 2.11.

L' Olivetti M24 è il primo computer della Olivetti
compatibile con il sistema DOS, e quindi aperto
a tutti i software disponibili sul mercato.
La scelta si rese necessaria dopo l'insuccesso dell' Olivetti M20,
il primo personal computer della casa italiana,
progettato sul sistema operativo PCOS,
un particolare linguaggio sviluppato dalla Olivetti e
totalmente incompatibile con i software comuni.

Ma ancor più condizionante fu la storica alleanza
firmata dalla Olivetti con la AT&T, il colosso americano delle telecomunicazioni;
in seguito a quell'accordo le vendite dell' Olivetti M24
aumentarono incredibilmente, al punto che la Olivetti divenne,
nel 1985, il secondo produttore di computer al mondo e il primo in Europa.
L' Olivetti M24, inoltre, si presentava in una veste più professionale e versatile:
il cabinet era separato dalla tastiera e poteva contenere,
oltre al floppy disk drive, anche un hard-disk Winchester da 5 Mb.

L'hardware si basava su un processore Intel 8086 a 8 Mhz e ben 16 bit,
con una grafica migliorata rispetto al predecessore.

Il PC nasceva, nella sua versione di base, con una scheda grafica CGA a quattro colori con una risoluzione di 640X400 pixel, due unità floppy da 5,25", 360 KB single sided ed una memoria RAM di 128 KB espandibile a 640 KB.

Nelle prime versioni della macchina non era prevista l'installazione di un hard disk,
pertanto gli utenti erano costretti ad avviare la machina con il sistema operativo
DOS in dotazione attraverso il floppy disk.

Alla fine del 1986, da parte di O.P.E. (Olivetti Peripheral Equipment),
naque il primo hard disk (10 MB) per Olivetti M24 in versione interna,
che aveva un costo variabile tra i due ed i cinque milioni di lire.

Per non scontentare i clienti e le software-house, Olivetti inserì, nell'M24, una scheda di emulazione M20 basata su processore Z8000, sorella della scheda per M20.
Questa scheda permetteva di usare tutto il software scritto per
Olivetti PCOS, il sistema operativo dell'Olivetti M20.

Si può quindi considerare l' Olivetti M24 una "pietra miliare"
nella storia dell'informatica italiana.

Un M24 costava circa sei milioni di lire nel gennaio 1986
equivalente a circa 6.600€ del 2008,veniva fornito a corredo un manuale utente,
l'interprete GW-Basic Olivetti con manuale
ed il sistema operativo MS-DOS in versione 2.11.
